Are you curious about working with analogue film? Are you an artist who wants to explore 16mm workflows? This intensive short course, hosted by the Department of Theatre, Film and Television Studies, offers a hands-on introduction to filmmaking using 16mm photochemical film. Over the five days, participants will learn how to shoot on film and will have the opportunity to explore the versatility and many creative possibilities offered by the Bolex camera. Participants will also be introduced to basic black-and-white film processing in our dedicated darkroom using hand-processing and eco-processing techniques. There will be opportunities to edit on film, make contact prints of the processed negatives, and experiment with sound recording. The course culminates in a group projection and social event.

Alongside practical sessions, the course includes contextual discussions on the history and contemporary resurgence of analogue filmmaking, including artist-run film labs and experimental practices. This situates participants’ work within a wider global network of filmmakers committed to sustaining and reimagining photochemical film culture. The course takes place at Aberystwyth University, in the Department of Theatre, Film and Television’s dedicated film Lab Labordy Ffilm Aber (Aber Film Lab). There will be opportunities to film in the stunning landscapes that surround the university.
